What is Dementia?

Dementia is a syndrome, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, language, reasoning, planning, behaviour, and ability to perform everyday activities. The word “dementia” means ‘mad’ or ‘insane’ in Latin. Dementia is a progressive disease and it ultimately impairs the ability of an individual to carry on routine functions such as doing household chores, driving, bathing, dressing, and feeding.

Dementia is overwhelming not only for the people who have it, but also for their caregivers and families. There is a lack of awareness and understanding of dementia in most countries, resulting in stigmatization, barriers to diagnosis and care, and impacting carers, families and societies physically, psychologically and economically. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.

How Common is Dementia?

  • The number of people living with dementia worldwide is currently estimated at 47 million and is projected to increase to 75 million by 2030.
  • Worldwide, a new case of dementia is diagnosed every 4 seconds.

  • By 2050, the number of cases of dementia are estimated to almost triple to affect 135 million people globally.
  • Women over 65 are almost two times more likely to develop dementia than men over 65.
  • About 2.5 million people worldwide under the age of 65 suffer from some type of dementia.
